Terror probe after one killed and several wounded in shooting in Paris suburb

A terrorism investigation is under way after one person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting in a suburb of Paris.

Gunshots were fired from a vehicle in a drive-by shooting in the Yvelines district west of Paris on Friday, French police said.

A suspect has been arrested near the town of Trappes and taken into custody.

Police said the motive remained unclear but France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office said it was investigating.

Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, told BFMTV that a man had fired shots from his car and "appeared to be firing at random and seemed ‌intent on carrying out a massacre".

He said among those injured was a 12-year-old ‌girl.

The attack happened as France braces for more protests on Saturday against the high cost of living.

The government is deploying a significantly larger security presence to prevent a repeat of last week's widespread unrest.

And major museums will be closed.
