Five people and suspected gunman killed after mass shooting in Michigan

Five people and a suspected gunman have died after a series of shootings in the US state of Michigan.

Police were called to reports of a shooting at a home in Missaukee County, a rural area approximately 170 miles (270 kilometres) northwest of Detroit, just before 12pm local time.

They found three people dead and another in a critical condition, who is now being treated at a local hospital.

Officers then launched a manhunt for suspect Chad Hickman, 39, and found a fourth person dead at another home.

The force warned members of the public that he was armed and dangerous, and urged people not to approach him.

They eventually tracked Hickman's vehicle to a wooded area and found his body along with another victim.

Michigan state police spokesperson Lt Ashley Miller said: "This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved.

"We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available."

Police have asked people to avoid the areas where the shootings took place.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer confirmed she is monitoring the situation and added: "My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the Missaukee community."

The motive has yet to be determined, and the victims will not be identified until the families have been notified.

State Representative Ken Borton also offered his condolences to the victims, the Detroit News reports.

He said: "Please join me in praying for our Northern Michigan community tonight after the unspeakable acts of violence we saw unfold today, especially send prayers for the six families who lost a loved one today and pray that an additional person, currently fighting for their life, will pull through and make a full recovery."
