Train driver who died in crash that injured 100 had passed red signal moments before collision, investigators say

A train driver who died in a crash near Bedford had passed a red signal moments before the collision, investigators say.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch revealed the finding in a statement on Wednesday.

It said that "it is not yet possible to say what indication the driver received" from automatic warning system (AWS) equipment fitted to the train.

More than 100 people were injured in the collision which saw one train smash into the back of another on the same line, with 53 people remaining in hospital on Monday.

The driver who died at the scene has been named as 60-year-old Shaun Burton.
